Specialized metabolites: from biosynthesis to regulation

Level of organization: plants, plant ecosystem

Scientific topic included: medicinal plant natural products, defense-related compounds, pigments, fragrances, and other specialized metabolites.

Scope: Studies that advance our understanding of:

  • the structural diversity and biosynthetic origins of plant natural products,
  • the discovery and characterization of novel metabolites and biosynthetic enzymes,
  • the regulation of specialized metabolic pathways,
  • the physiological and ecological functions of these compounds.

Research involving metabolic engineering and synthetic biology would also be welcome when it provides new insights into plant specialized metabolism.
