Winners of the Reviewer Reward 2020

Miquel Nadal

Miquel is one of our three Reviewer awardees and we are very happy to support him with a travel grant to a conference of choice! He has recently finished his PhD at the University of Balearic Islands (UIB) in Spain, where he investigated the relationship between photosynthesis and water stress tolerance at the leaf level. Miquel is now a Postdoctoral fellow in the Group of Biology of plants under Mediterranean conditions (UIB) and mainly works on photosynthesis, hydraulics and leaf biomechanics.

For Miquel the process of reviewing is a great way to improve his critical skills as a researcher, and he hopes that he can contribute to the accuracy of the published science.

The first thing I try to check when reviewing a paper is the clear statement of a hypothesis and objectives, which need to be organically drawn from the introduction. A key point for me is the soundness of the statistical analysis performed and its connection with the main conclusions of the study. Finally, I always write to the editor which areas of the paper are outside my field of expertise, so he/she knows the limits of my revision.

We are very grateful for Miquel’s thorough approach and his reviewer expertise in the field of Ecophysiology, Stress and Adaptation and wish him to pursue his successful path.

Anket Sharma

Anket’s expertise has been frequently used this year, especially for our Special Issues thanks to his broad knowledge in topics ranging from stress physiology, molecular biology to hormone metabolism. When it comes to methodological knowledge, Anket is an expert in GC-MS. After doing his Postdoc in China, he recently reallocated to the University of Maryland, USA, to work on auxin metabolism and homeostasis.

Anket feels that critical, rigorous and constructive peer-review is an integral part of scientific publication, and he is happy about his contribution as referee for Physiologia Plantarum (PPL). As an early career researcher, reviewing high-quality research articles helped him to improve his scientific understanding and skills. Additionally, reviewing for PPL also provided an opportunity to keep him up to date about the recent developments in plant physiology.

Nobuhiro Suzuki

We are happy to announce Nobuhiro as one of our Reviewer Awardees for this year. He is an Associate Professor at the Sophia University in Japan and his research field covers molecular biology and plant physiology. Currently, Nobuhiro is working on signaling networks regulating different types of abiotic stresses in plants. Apart from being an active reviewer, Nobuhiro is also part of the editorial board at the Plant-MDPI. In addition, Nobuhiro was selected as a Highly Cited Researcher in 2019 and 2020 by Clarivate Analytics. His knowledge and experience as an active researcher, reviewer and editor are very much appreciated.

Nobuhiro’s thoughts about being a reviewer: “I am thinking how the manuscripts can be improved so that many readers (other scientists) can obtain useful information from the papers when I am reviewing the manuscripts. Thus, reviewing is a quite important work to contribute to the development of science.”
